Paint it Red is a monthly collaborative music and art event held at Jugglers Art Space in Fortitude Valley and other venues across Brisbane and Melbourne. The event showcases classical chamber music, jazz and improvised music, and other art music forms including folk and electronic music, in an intimate and contemporary gallery space adorned by art works from local Brisbane art students and professionals. It was created as a sharing space and forum for the classical, jazz, and visual art communities of Brisbane and is a sort of meeting place for musicians and artists to collaborate and share their ideas. The event series has hosted some amazing performances of new music, jazz improvisation, exhibitions of paintings and drawings, and impressive multi disciplinary performances. A recurring theme for the event is the idea of improvised ‘reaction art’, where an artist will create original visual works live to either pre-composed or improvised music. With the support of Paint it Red, over half a dozen original art works are now owned by galleries and attendees.
We’re very excited to perform at this event and glad to have started rehearsing after the Christmas break. Each of us has started the year off with teaching and overseas trips and really had blast last night smashing out a rehearsal for Saturday. The show we’re presenting will feature some new pieces written by myself and Thomas Sweeper and they’re a bit unconventional to say the least!
Here’s some past rehearsal antics for your viewing pleasure!
We’ll be joined by performances on the evening from Anna Kho and her string quintet, Steve Newcomb and Kristin Berardi and local band Cigany Weaver. Our SOUNDSTRUCK performance will also be accompanied by some reactionary art.
Come and check us out with the paint and choreography this weekend!
